On 26 April 1984, the president of Pakistan, Zia-ul-Haq issued an ordinance, known as Ordinance XX or Anti Ahmadiyya Ordinance.
Under Ordinance XX, Ahmadis could no longer profess their faith, either verbally or in writing.
Pakistani police destroyed Ahmadi translations of the Holy Quran and banned Ahmadi publications, and the use of any Islamic terminology.
In addition, Ordinance XX prohibited Ahmadis from declaring their faith publicly, propagating their faith, building mosques, or making the call for Muslim prayers.
