Sheikh Amri Ubaidi was a poet, politician and lingual expert. He was born in 1924 in the town of Ujiji in the western province of Tanganyika,

Tanzania. He received his early education at Ujiji, and then in 1927, joined a school in Tabora. 

In 1941, he joined the Postal Training School in Dar es Salaam. 

He came to Rabwah in 1953 and joined Jamia Ahmadiyya, and after attaining Shahid degree in 1956, he was appointed as the Incharge of the Ahmadiyya Mission Dar es Salaam. From 1950 to 1953, he was the only African member of the board that translated the Holy Quran into the Swahili language. 

He spoke Urdu, Swahili, English and Arabic.

On 15 February 1960, he was elected as the mayor of Dar es Salaam for the first time. He was soon elected unopposed to the Tanganyika Legislative Council. 

Some of his great speeches in the National Assembly gave him a lot of fame. He played a great role in the approval of Eid-ul-Adha holiday in Tanganyika and allow Muslim employees of the government offices to leave after 12pm on a Friday. 

In early 1962, he was appointed Regional Commissioner for the Western Province of Tanganyika, and Minister of Justice on 12 March 1963. 

When Zanzibar and Tanganyika merged in 1964, he was given the ministry of cultural affairs. He led his country's delegation to the 18th session of the United Nations. He also joined the delegation at the Cairo Summit of African Heads of State. But he got sick there and was sent to Germany for treatment. 

He passed away on 9 October 1964. On 16 October, he was buried with full army protocols at the Ahmadiyya graveyard. The National President and members of the cabinet also attended his funeral and paid respect to him.
