When Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) reached the age of 17 or 18 a Shia named Gul Ali Shah of Batala was appointed his tutor and Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) learnt the basics of Arabic grammar and some logic from him.
It is narrated that he was a great smoker and some of his pupils would make fun of him, but Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) never joined them and always remained respectful. And thus, uninspired by applause and undeterred by ridicule, he gave early evidence of his courageous determination to remain loyal to his principles.
Lala Bhim Sain and Muhammad Hussain were also among Gul Ali Shah's pupils in those days.
