Bhera is an ancient town on the bank of the Jhelum River, in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Before the arrival of the Arya Nation, Bhera was a great trading center in the Punjab. Muslims arrived here during the blessed era of Hazrat Umar Faruq (ra) and Hazrat Uthman (ra).
During the time of Hazrat Uthman (ra), the Muslims had established their commercial base here as well as a preaching center. The historic royal mosque of Bhera was built by Sher Shah Suri which is a model of beautiful architecture.
The Mughals also gave a boost to this historic city, but in the Sikh era, the prosperity of Bhera was completely ruined. In the same period, Hazrat Hakim Maulvi Nuruddin (ra), Khalifatul Masih I, was born (1841) in this town.
Other Ahmadis belonging to Bhera include Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Sadiq (ra), Hazrat Mufti Fazlur Rahman (ra), Hazrat Maulvi Dilpazir (ra), Hazrat Juma Khan (ra), and Hazrat Qureshi Najamuddin (ra).
Hazrat Juma Khan (ra) was a great carpenter. He built two doors of the same style, one of which is in the Museum of Lahore today, and the other one is in the Masjid Nur of Bhera, on the entrance of the room in which Hazrat Hakim Maulvi Nuruddin (ra), Khalifatul Masih I, was born.
Upon the instruction of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih I (ra), his ancestral mosque was given to non-Ahmadis after a dispute arose and his ancestral house was turned into Ahmadiyya Masjid Nur. The monuments of Hazrat Hakim Maulvi Nuruddin (ra) have been preserved here.
There is still a tanur (an Indian style oven for baking bread) on the side of this mosque from where bread was baked for the house of Huzoor (ra). When the opposition of Huzoor (ra) increased to such an extent that the people boycotted him, the owner of the tanur was also put under pressure but he continued to give bread to him with great courage.
Most of the ancestral houses and other places of Huzoor (ra) are owned by the Jamaat.
Earlier, the plaque of Koocha Hakim Nuruddin was hung in three places in this area which was later removed. The building constructed as the hospital is now being used as a telegram house, and the old building of the hospital was first used as a primary school and later took the form of warehouses.
Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad (ra), Khalifatul Masih II, visited Bhera during his Khilafat, and delivered an address - an event that adds to the significance of this city.
