Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad (ra), the second Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, not only guided the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent step by step during the Pakistan Movement but also made every possible effort for the protection of the Muslims’ rights.

He informed the Muslims of India in a timely manner about the anti-Muslim movements arising from the platform of the Congress.

In response to the Nehru Report, Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad (ra) commented on the Nehru Report in detail. Al Fazl published those comments from 2 October to 2 November 1928. It was later published in book form titled, Nehru Report aur Musalmanon ke Masaleh (The Nehru Report and Muslims’ Interests), in which he stated that this committee could not be deemed representative of India and then shed light on the demands of the Muslims.

For the First Round Table Conference (20 November 1930) Huzoor (ra) wrote an article Solution to the Political Problems of India and sent it to England, in which the validity of the Muslims’ demands and rights was addressed in detail.

Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad (ra) wanted freedom for Kashmir’s oppressed Muslims. He was also elected as the first president of the Kashmir Committee in 1931. He wrote detailed articles in regard to the Kashmir Movement and gave valuable guidance to the Muslim leaders, and Muslims in general.

When Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah suffered disappointment on the part of Indian politics, he moved to England and decided to settle there. In that situation, Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad (ra) wished to bring him back to India to continue the struggle, so he instructed Hazrat Maulvi Abdur Rahim Dard (ra) to persuade Jinnah to return. Hazrat Maulvi Abdur Rahim Dard (ra) had meetings with Jinnah and tried to convince him. Upon Dard Sahib’s invitation, Jinnah attended an event on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha at the Fazl Mosque in London, in April 1933. Jinnah delivered a speech on the future of India and began his speech in these words:

“The eloquent persuasion of the Imam [Dard Sahib (ra)] left me no escape.”

Then,

“Consequently, Mr. Jinnah returned to India in 1934 and was elected to the Central Assembly, un-opposed.” (Pakistan Times, 11 September 1981, Quaid-I-Azam Anniversary Supplement, p. 2, col. 1)

Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad (ra) wrote an article, titled “Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya’s Policy Regarding the Upcoming Elections”, on 21 October 1945. He narrated his views about the future of India, in light of both demands – the partition of India and United India. After elaborating the whole situation, he stated:

“Every Ahmadi should support the policy of the Muslim League so that after the elections, the Muslim League can say to the Congress without any fear of denial that it is representative of the Muslims.” (Al Fazl, 22 October 1945, p. 3)

When a Boundary Commission was formed for the division of Punjab and Bengal, Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya, under the guidance of Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad (ra), continued to support the Muslim League and submitted its own Memorandum as well in support of the Muslim cause.

Justice Muhammad Munir stated:

“The President of this Court, who was a member of that Commission, considers it his duty to record his gratitude to Chaudhri Zafrullah Khan for the valiant fight he put up for Gurdaspur. This is apparent from the record of the Boundary Commission which anyone who is interested may see. For the selfless services rendered by him to the Muslim community, it is shameless ingratitude for anyone to refer to Chaudhri Zafrullah Khan in the manner in which he has been referred to by certain parties before the Court of Inquiry.” (Munir Inquiry Report, p. 293)

In December 1947, Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad (ra) started a series of lectures on Pakistan and its future, which were delivered in Lahore. In March 1948, Huzoor (ra) initiated another series of lectures, comprising guidance for the citizens of Pakistan and their national obligations.
